Our Puppies
All of our puppies are sold with Limited registration. Dogtown Kennels will only sell a puppy with full registration to a Licensed Breeder, with proof of business. For those that are looking for a dog to show, please contact us and we will discuss this further. We have gone to Limited Registrations, due to the fact that there are many dogs being born to people who do not take care of the dogs / puppies and we are trying to care for future pups.
FYI: In Illinois, there was a person who was breeding Chihuahuas and had 71 dogs in a small townhouse. These poor little dogs were starving, dehydrated and were in need of medical attention not to mention that the article stated that the residence was full of dog feces and urine. The Police were called to this persons home and all of the 71 dogs and many pups were confiscated. The local animal shelters are full and now they have all of these poor things. They were calling this an illegal puppy mill.
As you can see, this is why I have chose to go with limited registration. I care to much for the well being of all of my dogs, including the pups and I do not want to see them going through this either. I have a lot of time and love invested in each pup and I am very worried about their well being, whether here or in their new homes. I am willing to talk about this with anyone that would like to discuss it.
ALL of our dogs are AKC registered. There are many different types of kennel clubs out there and although these clubs are growing, I still prefer to use AKC as this is the oldest kennel club and the most reputable one. More people recognize AKC because of their strictness on the breeds. Where as many of the newer clubs are letting people register their mixed breeds which is fine, but then many of these people will try to raise puppies from these mixed breeds and try to get more money out of these dogs, saying that they are purebreds. I am not saying everyone does this, but many of them do. Also, many puppy mills will use different breeder clubs so that they are not inspected and audited. I personally like the idea of being inspected so that they know that my dogs are being well taken care of.
As far as backyard breeders are concerned, I realize that there are some out there that do take wonderful care for their animals and do a wonderful job raising puppies. But, then on the other hand, there are more people out there that do not take care of them and try to get a lot of money out of them and honestly think of nothing but the money. When you work with a breeder, they think about the welfare of the puppies and their futures. When so much love and time goes into each little pup that is produced it takes a considerable amount of time to have them socialized and become ready for their new homes. Along with the pups, there are the adults that are breeders. Here, we take great pride in taking wonderful care of the adults and being able to play with them on a daily basis and love them on a daily basis.
When choosing a puppy from anyone, you should know what breed you are looking for and if it will be suitable for your household and your life style. You will need to think of the future. If you want to use the dog as a breeder or a confirmation show dog, you will want to get full registration. If you wish for a pet and have no plans on using the dog as a breeder but would possibly like to show the dog, then we suggest that you get the limited registration with that puppy. It is not our choice as to what type of registration that you would like to get. But, as the breeder of these puppies I do have the right to decide if that puppy should be registered with full registration or not.
We do like to know how the puppies are doing as they grow and ask that we be kept informed about the progress well into the adult years. We truly enjoy getting updates and pictures of the puppies, via mail or email. Dogtown Kennels does reserve the right to use the pictures of the puppies in our Extended family area. Please do not be alarmed if you have sent pictures and they have not made it to the Extended family page, as it takes time to get these all entered in. If you have sent pictures in and it has been sometime since you did so, you might want to resend them, as sometimes the cyberspace seems to keep these for themselves! We don't always receive them and would love to get the updates!! Please if you have sent pictures and they are not in the extended family page, please email us and see if we did receive the pictures or not.
All of our dogs are on vitamins from NuVet. These vitamins are all natural and are much better for your puppy as they grow, versus the other vitamins that are out there, which are full of sugars and starches. I previously have used vitamins from our veterinarian and really did not notice a difference in the dogs on those vitamins, but have noticed a considerable difference in my dogs coats, eagerness and just overall well being of the dogs since I have started them on the NuVet Plus Vitamins.
As a testimonial, I have a male golden that was having trouble producing litters and decided I would go ahead and put him on the vitamins and also the Nu-Joint plus to see if this helped him any. Since none of my males were previously on these vitamins, just the females, I decided what the heck, I will go ahead and see what happens. We did finally have our first litter out of him in over 2 years. Now, all of my dogs are on these vitamins. I wouldn't change them for the world. After seeing the changes that it has made in both of my males and females, I will stand behind these vitamins and even feel so strongly about them, that I now require that you keep your puppy on these vitamins for the duration of the guarantee. Although I would like to see you keep your pet on them for their life, as it will help them stay healthy. NuVet also has these vitamins for cats, and I have my cats on them also.
We require that you continue the use of these vitamins for your puppy, through at least the duration of the guarantee, although it would be best to keep them on them for life, for the benefit of your 4 legged family member. You will not notice any changes in the puppy because of the fact that the females have been on these even prior to conception, during the pregnancy and as the puppies have grown. The puppies have started receiving the vitamins orally after they are weaned. It is a known fact that the healthier that you keep you pets, the better off they will be. It will cut down the amount of trips that you make to the veterinarians office for illnesses, because of being healthier. This will also prevent other health ailments that many dogs can get as they age. We have a link to NuVet on our favorites page, if you would like to read up on this or click on the NuVet icon on this page and learn more.
Our puppies have their dew claws removed at 3 days old. All of our puppies will be current on their puppy series vaccinations and dewormings. We normally have the puppies wormed at least 3 times by the time that they go to their new homes. The smaller breeds normally can go home at 8 weeks of age, unless they are under 1 pound or I feel that they need to stay longer to make sure that they are doing fine, before I will place them in their new homes. The larger dogs can go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age.
