Playtime Fun Leads to Painful Treatment

As so many of our AKC supporters know from first hand experience, dogs suffer from similar injuries as their two-legged human companions. Case in point: Blue, a healthy two year old American Staffordshire Terrier, who loves to play in the yard and who suddenly injured his right knee while playing outside. The events that followed proved painful for Blue, worrying for his owners - and costly!

Richard and Tina are Blue's owners. One day, they noticed Blue was yelping in pain and limping after a playful romp outside. After a trip to the vet, Blue was diagnosed with a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), which is the ligament in the knee joint that connects to the femur bone. So that Blue would not suffer long-term arthritis, the vet suggested surgery to repair the injured ligament. And, as in human medicine, veterinary orthopedic surgery is expensive. Blue's surgery and treatment came to a total cost of $1,931. Happily, the Browns' AKC Pet Healthcare plan covered $1,465 of the total costs.

Blue made a speedy recovery, and was so healthy in fact that Richard and Tina almost canceled their AKC Pet Healthcare policy. However, just a few weeks later, Blue suffered a similar injury on his left leg…and Tina was so thankful to have kept her pet care plan! In Tina's words: "the Pet Insurance was a godsend! We would never cancel after what happened this year. You just never know!"
